Magdalena Kuguru is a social scientist and coordinates a study on “Conceptualizing, defining, and measuring sexual harassment” at the National Institute for Medical Research in Mwanza. She was previously a research coordinator for two studies at NIMR Mwanza: “Next-T project: Increase access of adolescent for HIV testing” and “the Understanding attitudes and knowledge of Healthcare providers regarding the depirivine ring.”
Before coming to NIMR in Mwanza, Magdalena was an intern at NIMR-HQ in Dar es Salaam where she worked on policy analysis and advocacy and as a research assistant for a number of research studies. Some of these studies include the “Evaluating means of collecting information on Neglected tropical diseases in Pwani region, “Access and the availability of maternal health drugs in the Health facilities in Mbeya region” and a study on how “Out of school girls” (15-24), particularly domestic workers and commercial sex workers make their sexual and reproductive health choices. Magdalena has also worked as a research assistant at Marie Stopes International and as a consultant at Empowerment Business Consult and Research Triangle Institute International on such topics as reproductive health, involving parents and communities in child education initiatives, and gender equality.
Magdalena believes that elites have the responsibility to give back to their communities because of their exposure and experience in addressing health issues. With their knowledge and experience, they can inform policy by suggesting and designing feasible interventions to address health issues. In order to give back to the Tanzanian community and the world, Magnalena is keen to participate in research that informs policy makers on how to halt the health challenges facing humanity particularly those that touch on the proper and timely utilization of health care resources.
Magdalena holds an M.A. in Research and Public Policy and a B.A. in Political Science and Public Administration both from University of Dar es salaam, Tanzania. She plans to pursue her doctoral studies in Public Health and pursue a career in health research.
